Harold Hare loved running more than anything in the world.
Tuwing umaga, pag-kagising siya ay tumatakbo.
Every morning, he woke up and went for a run.
Then he ran to work,
tumatakbo siya buong araw,
ran around all day,
at tatakbo pa rin pauwi sa kanyang bahay.
and ran home.
||||||||||||probably|||||||
Everyone said he was the fastest hare around maybe the fastest hare in history.
"Harold, ang galing mo!"
Harold|||
"Harold, you're amazing!"
Si Harold ay nakatitiyak dito.
|||sure|
Harold was sure of it.
"Eh, alam nyo na, marami akong pagsasanay na ginagawa.
||||||training||
Well, you know, I do a lot of training.
||Turtle||||||
Tom Tortoise worked with Harold.
|||||||boasting
All day long, he heard Harold boasting.
but||||||||
He didn't think Harold was so special.
"Natalo ko ang sarili kong rekord - muli!"
I beat||||||
"I beat my own record - again!"
Palaging pinagtatawanan ni Harold si Tom.
always|laughing at||||
Harold was always laughing at him.
"Huwag kang magmadali, Tommy!"
||hurry|Tommy
"Take your time, Tommy!"
Tatakbo lang ako kung handa ka na!
I'll just run on the spot until you're ready!
Isang umaga, masayang dumating si Harold.
One morning, Harold was feeling very pleased with himself.
arrived|||||||schedule||
He ran to work in record time.
|||||heavy||||slow down|
I really need some extra heavy shoes to slow me down!
||||||being||||
"I must be the fastest creature in the world," he boasted.
|perhaps|||||prove|
"Let's have a race to prove it."
Sige na, sino ang gustong sumali?"
Come on, who wants to race?
|||||agreed|||
Harold couldn't believe it when Tom Tortoise plodded over.
"I'll race you, Harold," he said quietly.
"Tom Pagong? Seryoso ka ba?" tanong ni Harold.
"Tommy Slowcoach? Are you serious?" asked Harold.
"Hindi ka pa magsisimula!"
|||starting
"You wouldn't even get started!"
"Ho ho, that's a good one!"
"Seryoso ako," sabi ni Tom.
"I mean it," said Tom.
"Let's have the race next Saturday at ten o'clock.
Ikaw ang pumili ng lugar."
||choose||
You choose where to race."
"Mabuti yan, magkakaroon ang lahat ng pagkakatuwaan."
||||||fun
"Well, we'll all have a good laugh anyway."
For the next few days, the animals talked about nothing else.
"Nababaliw na ba si Tommy?"
crazy||||
Has Tommy gone crazy?
|||||||newspapers
The story was in all the newspapers.
Ito rin ay nabanggit kahit sa telebisyon.
|||mentioned|||
It was even on television.
Nagsanay mabuti si Harold.
Harold trained extra hard.
He woke up early in the mornings, and went running in the evenings too.
|||||||||measure||
He knew he would win, but he wanted to win by miles.
||||long|||||
He chose a good long course for the race.
Tom Tortoise didn't seem to be training at all.
perhaps|||||none||sense
Perhaps he thought there was no point.
Don't you think you should exercise a little?
Sa wakas, dumating ang Sabado.
At last, Saturday arrived.
All Harold's friends came to watch him race.
||||||there||||||
Tom's friends were there too, but they didn't look quite so happy.
Ito ay isang napakagandang araw.
It was a beautiful day.
Harold saw some television cameras and did a little running specially for them.
continued||||||||||
Tom just kept on talking to his friends.
Soon it was time for the race to begin.
|||||starting||
Harold was already at the starting line.
Si Tom naman ay dahan-dahang umusog.
||||slowly||moved
Tom slowly ambled over.
come||Tommy||||start||
"Come on Tommy, let's not start late."
|||marks|||||umpire
"On your marks, get set, GO!" shouted the umpire.
|||||||||suddenly|disappeared
Harold raced off and disappeared almost at once.
||||||||||inot|||||
Everyone laughed as poor Tom plodded over the line.
|||||||||||||||||||rest
As soon as he was out of sight, Harold stopped beside a tree to rest.
"Kailangan lang ...kunin ... ang aking hininga ..."
||take|||
"Just need to...catch...my breath..."
After all his early morning training, Harold was very tired.
Walang nakatingin.
Nobody was looking.
Napakahaba ng oras niya para umupo sandali.
very long||||||for a moment
He had plenty of time to sit down for a while.
he will win||||||||
He would still win the race easily.
Ang kanyang mga mata ay nagsimulang magsara.
||||||to close
His eyes started closing.
Bakit hindi umidlip!
||nap (verb)
Why not have a nap!
||||||||of that
That would make it even funnier when he won the race.
Siya ay umupo sa lilim.
He settled down in the shade.
Di nagtagal siya ay nakatulog.
Soon he was asleep.
|||||||moves||
Meanwhile, Tom Tortoise was slowly making his way along the course.
|||||went straight||||
Most of the animals had gone straight to the finish line,
Only Tom's friends stayed with him.
Nobody saw Harold sleeping under his tree.
Dumaan ang maraming oras.
Hours passed.
setting||||||||
The sun was setting and the air was cool.
Biglang nagising si Harold.
Harold woke with a start.
Nasaan na siya?
Where was he?
Biglang naalaala niya ang karera.
|remembered|||
Suddenly he remembered the race.
Hindi niya sinadyang makatulog ng matagal
||intended|||
He hadn't meant to sleep for so long...
|||||defeat||
but he could still beat Tom.
|||||||||nap
Harold felt much better after his nap.
|||stretched||||||
He did a few stretches, then raced off.
Nakikita na niya ngayon ang finish line.
He could see the finish line now.
Nagkaroon ng isang malaking pulutong ng nanonood ....
||||crowd||
There was a huge crowd...
... at sila ay nagpapalakpakan na.
|||clapping|
...and they were already cheering.
|||||||||turtle|||||
At that moment, he saw a small, brown shell shape coming up to the line.
Nakaramdam ng biglang panlalamig si Harold.
|||chill||
Harold felt cold all over.
Tiyak na hindi siya si Tom?
Surely that wasn't Tom?
Tumakbo siya nang mas mabilis kaysa dati.
He ran faster than ever before.
Oo, magagawa niya ito !
Yes, he could do it!
Lumakas ng lumakas ang palakpakan at sigawan.
||grew louder||||shouting
The cheering grew louder and louder.
"Tignan nyo, si Harold!"
look at|you||
"Look, it's Harold!"
"Ano ba ang nangyari sa kanya?"
"Whatever happened to him?"
jumped||||top|||||||
Harold dived over the line, but he was too late.
||||||||||out of breath
Tom Tortoise had won --- and he didn't even look out of breath.
"Si Tommy ang nagwagi!"
|||won
"Tommy's the winner!"
"Ang galing, Tommy!"
"Well done, Tommy!"
The moral of the story about the hare and the tortoise is:
||steady|||||||
Slow and steady wins the race.
